wasted mornings.

August in the Algarve has one rule: do not fight the middle of the day. Every day below follows the same local shape, so nobody is negotiating plans at breakfast.

• by 09:00Out the door. The one thing of the day (market, park, beach, boat) happens in the cool hours.
• 13:00Back to the flat. Lunch, shade, naps, phones, cards. UV peaks around 9 from 13:00 to 17:00; the locals are all indoors too.
• 17:00Out again. The sea is at its warmest, the light is gold, the crowds are leaving. This is the best beach window of the day.
• 20:00Dinner like the Portuguese. Restaurants only fill from 20:00; booking at 19:30 gets you the pick of the tables.

One planned thing per day. Everything else on this page is optional. If the family is happy on a towel, cancel the plan and stay on the towel.

No plans today beyond landing softly. Everyone was up early; the only job is getting fed, stocked, and into bed.

• 17:20Land FAO. Cabin bags only, so you clear arrivals fast — no belt to wait for.
• 17:30Car pickup, Drive on Holidays, Car Park P4. Bring the voucher, both drivers' licences, passports, and the 0750 credit card. Photograph the car before you drive off.
• ~18:00Drive to Quarteira, about 20–25 minutes.
• en routeGrocery stop. There is an ALDI 50 m from the apartment (the host confirmed it, and it has self-service laundry machines too, since the flat has no washing machine). Continente Modelo on Avenida de Ceuta is bigger if you want a proper shop. Get water, breakfast and snacks so Saturday doesn't start in a supermarket.
• ~18:30Check in at Solgarve, Rua da Abelheira. PIN 8018. Window is 16:00–20:00, so you're comfortably inside it.
• eveningUnpack, then an easy first dinner. Walk the Quarteira boardwalk (Avenida Marginal) and pick whatever looks good — no booking needed for a low-key first night. Bed early.

Saturday is the one day Loulé's market runs at full strength, so it goes first. Everything else is a short walk from the apartment.

• 09:00Loulé market, 15–20 min drive. The 1908 Moorish-domed covered market plus a Saturday-only outdoor farmers' and flea market, widely considered the best traditional market in the Algarve. Go early to beat the coach tours and the heat.
• 10:30Old town wander: small castle/museum, a Gothic church, artisan-shop lanes. About an hour is enough.
• 12:30Back to Quarteira. Lunch at the flat with whatever looked good at the market, plus Aldi basics.
• 13:00Flat hours. Rest through the hottest stretch; the beach is better later anyway.
• 17:00Praia de Quarteira — your town beach, on the doorstep. Nearly 2km of flat sand, Blue Flag, lifeguards, a playground and outdoor gym on the boardwalk. At five the sand has cooled, the sea is at its warmest and the sunbed crowd is packing up. Rent umbrellas/sunbeds if you want them.
• eveningBoardwalk stroll, then dinner: A Gaivota (beachfront, 30+ years, garlic prawns and grilled octopus) or Tico Tico (family-run, near the fish market, seafood rice, fish sold by weight). Book ahead — both get busy on a Saturday in August.

The big shared day out. About 25–30 minutes' drive. Dolphin, sea lion and bird shows, an aquarium tunnel, water slides and rides in one park — Alex will gravitate to the shows and splash pools, Lucia to the coasters and bigger slides.

• 09:15Leave the apartment for the 10:00 opening.
• all dayBring swimwear under your clothes, towels, and reef-safe sunscreen. 2026 online prices run roughly €41 adult / €31 child (1m–10yrs), meaningfully cheaper bought online than at the gate.
• noteIf anyone wants the swim-with-dolphins encounter, it's a paid add-on with very limited daily slots that sells out in August — book it the moment you arrive if it's a yes.
• eveningEveryone will be tired. Keep dinner simple and close — back in Quarteira or a casual spot near Albufeira on the way home.

The one beach you'd regret skipping: red sandstone cliffs against gold sand and turquoise water, repeatedly ranked among the best beaches in the world. Then an easy evening at Vilamoura marina.

• 09:30Drive to Praia da Falésia, Vilamoura/Rocha Baixinha end — under 10 minutes. Arrive before 10–11am; the paid lots (roughly €1–2.80/hr) fill up in August.
• watchAt high tide the sand narrows near the cliffs and can cut off walking between access points — keep the kids back from the cliff edges and overhangs, real erosion here.
• 12:30Lunch beachside or back at the apartment.
• afternoonLow-key. If everyone still has energy, the Family Golf Park near Vilamoura Marina (36 holes, playground, café) is an easy leveller for both ages.
• 18:30Vilamoura Marina stroll among the yachts; gelato for the kids, people-watching for Lucia. Dinner at Haven Restaurant (marina view, cataplana) or The Fisherman's Shack (grilled sardines, set back from the glossy front) — both fill fast, reserve ahead. Rule of thumb here: the terraces directly on the water charge 20–30% for the view; one street back the fish is the same.

Your last full day. A proper change of scene: a walled old town, then a lagoon crossing to a genuinely undeveloped island beach with one restaurant and no crowds.

• firstCheck the wind over breakfast. The crossing is an open lagoon boat; on a calm day it is magic, on a blowy one it is a chore. If it is blowing hard, flip to the Tavira swap in the Adjustables card; there is no calmer morning left in the trip, so decide honestly.
• 09:00Drive to Faro, 20–25 minutes. Park near the marina (5–10 min walk into the old town).
• 10:00Cidade Velha — the walled old town. Climb the cathedral (Sé de Faro) bell tower for views over the Ria Formosa, walk through orange-tree plazas, spot the storks nesting on the Arco da Vila gate. If there is a spare half hour, the Capela dos Ossos at Igreja do Carmo (10 min walk, small entry fee) is a chapel lined with real bones — the thing a 10-year-old talks about for a year.
• 12:30Boat from the Faro marina to Ilha Deserta (Barreta Island) — about a 45-minute lagoon crossing, roughly €11–12pp (Formosamar). Book ahead, small boats can sell out in August.
• 13:30Beach, swim. Lunch is a choice: Estamine is the island's one restaurant and prices like it, so either book it as the treat or bring an Aldi picnic and spend the savings on the farewell dinner. No shade beyond what you bring, and no shop — carry all your water.
• ~16:30Return ferry, drive back to Quarteira.
• 19:30Farewell dinner. Akvavit at Vilamoura marina is the safer family pick; Willie's Restaurant near Pinhal Golf is the area's Michelin-recognized option if the adults want to treat themselves — call ahead if bringing Alex.

Tight morning by design — pack the night before so this is just execution.

• 08:30Checkout window is 09:00–12:00, but the car return time forces an earlier start. Bags at the door by 08:30.
• 09:15Leave the apartment.
• 10:00Drop the car at Faro Airport, Car Park P4 (Drive on Holidays). Shuttle back to the terminal.
• noteThat leaves about 2 hours to bag-drop, security, and gate for the 12:10 departure — workable but not loose.

Quarteira sits in the middle of the good stuff. Almost everything on this page is inside an hour's drive, most of it inside thirty minutes. Push to two hours and the map grows teeth: the wild west coast, the mountains, and across the river into Spain. Every place below opens straight in the Google Maps app for directions.

If it's blowing hard on the Faro boat day (Tue): the crossing is an open lagoon boat, so light wind matters. Swap Ilha Deserta for Tavira — about 33 minutes' drive, its own island-beach ferry (10 minutes from Cais das Quatro Águas).

If everyone wants a second splashy day: Slide & Splash (Estombar/Lagoa) or Aqualand Algarve (Alcântarilha), both ~30 minutes, skew more toward thrill slides than Zoomarine — better fit for Lucia than Alex.

If someone wants pure adrenaline for an hour: Karting Algarve in Almancil (15 min) has adult 200/390cc karts plus a junior track and Mini-F1 karts for younger kids.

If you want dolphins without the Ilha Deserta detour: dolphin-watching boats leave directly from Vilamoura Marina, 1.5–2 hours, from about €23–45pp.

Heat management, every day: August afternoons run hot (highs ~28°C, UV ~9). Beach mornings before 11am or after 4pm dodge both crowds and worst sun; reapply SPF every 2 hours.
